In the town of Old Saybrook people take pride in the history of the place they call home. With a community of about 10,000 this place is one of the oldest towns in Connecticut.
Old Saybrook offers residents and visitors scenic views of the shoreline and an abundance of local history. This town is where Yale University was founded in 1700 as the Collegiate School for the education of the ministries. Old Saybrook has one of the top ranked educational systems in the state of Connecticut and holds this title with pride. Having deep roots in education this community even has a Yale University Seal for Saybrook College that’s used as the town logo.
The population of Old Saybrook was originally inhabited by Dutch settlers who made their first settlement at Governors Island, but over time this changed as there were many other cultures introduced to the area. There was also many English settlers who came in the area and became permanent residents of Old Saybrook. During this time there was also a lot of tension that rose in the area over land and who owned what. There was a Pequot siege that took place during the Pequot War and lead to the destruction of Mistick Fort in Saybrook.
Along with having a bountiful amount of history there has been a lot of modern history in Old Saybrook. In 2002 the town put forth the efforts into restoring and rebuilding the train station that was originally built in 1873. The funny thing about this restoration is that the Amtrak passes through the town of Old Saybrook but it doesn’t stop there. There is a train station that provides service for local residents, called Northeast Regional, but this is not the one that was renovated.
